Along the Nile: Exploring Food, Culture, and History
Join us for an evening of food, conversation, and learning centered on the cultures of the Nile Valley. Dr. Heather Sharkey, Professor of Modern Middle Eastern and North African History, will offer a brief, engaging introduction to the history and cultural traditions of Egypt, Sudan, and the broader Nile Basin, with particular attention to foodways across the region. The talk will highlight staple ingredients such as sorghum and millet in Sudan, teff in Ethiopia, and ancient wheat varieties like einkorn and emmer in Egypt - and what they reveal about cultural exchange over time. Following the talk, students are invited to enjoy a shared dinner inspired by the region and participate in an informal Q&A conversation. No prior knowledge is needed - just come curious and hungry.
