DWIP Tuesday 9/29: Victor Gomes
Next Tuesday's featured guest at DWIP ("Dinners With Interesting People") will be Victor Gomes, Associate DIrector of mindCORE ("Penn's hub for the integrative study of the mind"), and co-director of Penn's Cognitive Science program, which "combines results from biology, computer science, linguistics, mathematics, neuroscience, philosophy and psychology to the study of language processing, perception, action, learning, concept formation, inference and other activities of the mind, with applications for information technology and the study of artificial intelligence". As Wikipedia explains, Cognitive Science began as an intellectual movement in the 1950s, and Penn's Cognitive Science program was created just a couple of decades ago, based on a grant from the Sloan Foundation. Despite that relatively recent start, CogSci courses have become very popular, and (as the DP recently reported), the SAS cogsci major is now comparable in size to Psychology, and larger than Math, History, Physics, Chemistry, and English.
