Blutt College House Music Program

The mission of the Blutt College House Music Program is to provide partially subsidized private musical instruction to undergraduate students while bringing professional performances, master classes, and other musical events of the highest quality to the Penn community. Co-sponsored by CHAS and the Department of Music, the Blutt College House Music Program combines the exceptional musical talents of its instructors with the convenience and community of the College Houses.

Undergraduate Music Fellowships

CHAS and the Music Department select several undergraduate performing musicians each year as College House Undergraduate Music Fellows.  This fellowship supports the creation of a performance-centered project in one of the College Houses, designed and carried out by the Music Fellow. Additionally, the fellows each receive a semester of weekly one-hour private lessons with one of the instructors from the Department of Music.

An image of a man in a bright orange hoodie with eyes closed listening to headphones. Text reads "Whatever kind of music you make, bring it. College House Undergraduate Music Fellowships"

"The fellowship is a chance to share your love for music with your College House and College Houses at Penn, and it gives you an avenue to be as creative as possible…  It's a creative way for you to share your love for music with your friends at Penn, and also to encourage you to continue to pursue your passion or your hobby in music. [For me] it was a constant reminder— oh, I do play the drums outside my major and classes. It was another way for me to be motivated, for me to be connected with other musicians at Penn."

Du Bois Jazz Program

W.E.B. Du Bois College House has been involved in instructing musicians in the art of jazz for over twenty years. Currently as part of the Blutt College House Music Program in collaboration with the Department of Music, the Du Bois Music Room primarily hosts lessons in jazz piano for undergrads, but also gets a chance to host students for jazz organ, songwriting, music production, pop piano, and classical piano.

On the red section is a tree; on the green section is a peacock, and on the black section is an open book. A ribbon underneath the crest bears the House motto: "It takes a village."

Music Practice in the Houses

The College Houses have music and practice areas available to their residents. Please note that all music areas in the College Houses require a PENNCard for building entry. Some rooms are reserved for residents of those particular Houses or Residential Programs. Pianos in semi-public areas (lounges, galleries, multi-purpose rooms) may not be available when rooms are being used for other activities. Check with individual House Offices for permission to use these rooms and for more information.
